Holiday Stuff
I’ve been home in NoVa for a week now, so I haven’t really had any time for poker. For Christmas I went to Yorktown (3 hours south of NoVa) to stay at my grandparents’ house. That was cool. It’s always good to see family again. After dispatching Tom McEvoy in eight minutes, it was time to head back home.
On the 26th I went to my other grandmother’s house to celebrate Chanukah. For those of you that are wondering, my dad is Jewish and my mom is Christian. Growing up, I celebrated holidays on both sides, but I really got a lot more of the Jewish indoctrination. I attribute a lot of my success in poker to my Jewish heritage. I don’t want to get any anti-prejudice hate mails, so I’m gonna keep this explanation short and just say that Jews are good with money.
The next morning my brother and I drove back down to Yorktown. It was my grandparents’ 50th anniversary and their three kids (my mom included) were throwing them a surprise party. It would have been easier to just spend a couple days after Christmas in Yorktown, but that would have given away the surprise. It was worth it though. My Grandparents’ were really shocked, and my Mom and uncles did a great job of throwing the whole thing together.
During one portion of the Party, my mom revealed some photos they found of my grandparents in their attic. Now before I describe the photos, let me tell you about my grandparents. They are good Christian folk. They spend lots of time at the Church, volunteering to help out w/ events and teaching Sunday school. Basically they are just all around nice, honest people. My mom revealed these old black and white photos of them as teenagers posing in minimal clothing. I was completely shocked until I realized it was just a little photoshoppery. My mom really had everyone going though, and my grandmother was freaking out, fervently denying that it was her in the photo (although she said nothing about my grandfather’s photo!).
The whole event was done really well. My grandparents’ live in a small town, so I was kind of expecting the surprise to have been ruined, but it wasn’t. The GP’s were completely shocked and overwhelmed. Their initial reaction made the whole thing worth it.
After driving back that night, I played some drunken Cranium (that game is awesome by the way) with my brother, step sister, and a friend.
I feel bad that I’ve been home for a week and have only seen two people from my high school the entire time. I’m going to fix that tonight though. I suck at keeping in touch with people, and really miss all my high school friends, so I’m really looking forward to catching up with them tonight.
That’s about it I guess. There wasn’t really anything poker related I could write about (except for my eight minute win vs. McEvoy which didn’t seem worth writing in detail about), so I guess you guys are just stuck with a bunch of holiday sentimental stuff for now. WPT Bahamas is coming up soon, so that should make for some more interesting blogs.
